Family Christmas Traditions
I figured I would start with a simple topic that I believe will be very encouraging to our church and that is Family Christmas Traditions. I recently went to the Tod Agnew Concert last week and each member of the band told of their family traditions. They talked about the food, the caroling, and the different activities, but what was most striking was when they talked about the different ways their families made Jesus the center of their family gatherings. Tod spoke of how they actually made a Birthday cake for Jesus when he was growing up. I know that sounds crazy but think of how that would remind a child of what Christmas is all about. He also spoke of having to memorize the Christmas Story out of Luke before he could open any presents. If you have any family traditions that make Christmas that much more memorable for you or if you have some practical ways to remind our children and ourselves that the True meaning of Christmas is in the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ than please add a comment to this post.

Christmas Traditions. The thing about traditions is that as you grow up and start your own family you have to create your own family traditions. And then as the years go by those evolve and become other traditions. As a child I remember that Dad never brought home the Christmas tree until the eve of Christmas eve. Then him and Mom would leave us kids (6 of us) to decorate while they went to Grandma and Grandpa's. That was the only time I ever recall not being allowed to go to Grandma and Grandpa's. When I was grown I found out that that was just dad's excuse to go get the gifts he had hid in the barn.
ReplyDeleteAfter I married and we started our own family Grandma and Grandpa's wasn't close enough to hide gifts in the barn. So we had to be more creative in our hiding places.
Our current family tradition includes a trek across half the country. The first winter I spent here I didn't have any vacation time and I missed Christmas with my kids. A few days after Christmas my first grandchild was born and I vowed not to miss another Christmas with the kids and grandkids. This year, my last grandchild was born just a few days ago. So we will be leaving tomorrow (Tuesday) to make the annual trek to San Antonio. Keep us in your prayers as we travel and we will return shortly after the New Year begins.
I am just going through that process of making new traditions. This year Tausha and I tried to do the double Christmas. We were at my family's house for Christmas eve and part of Christmas day and then traveled to Missouri to see Tausha's family just before Christmas ended. While it is hard to give up some of the traditions we become acustomed to, it is just as exciting to start new ones. I am especially looking forward to starting new traditions with baby Benjamin on the way. I will be praying for you Carol and Kim. Thank you for being the first to leave a comment.
